1894

R. Reynolds Florance began practicing law in Richmond, VA. 

1896

James Waddell Gordon began practicing law in 1896, first with Smith, Moncure & Gordon (1896 to 1912). After William A. Moncure (1863-1947) became a judge, the firm became Smith & Gordon (1912 to 1936). James W. Gordon formed Gordon & Gordon with his son, James W. Gordon, Jr., in 1940.

1909

By 1909, R. Reynolds Florance was practicing law in the newly constructed Mutual Building (1904) at 9th & Main Streets, Richmond, VA., which numerous lawyers and professionals called home.

1924

Richard “Dick” Florance, graduated from the University of Virginia law school in 1924 joining his father in the practice of law in Richmond at the firm which was then known as Florance & Florance.

1930

Walker Florance joined his father and brother in the practice of law at Florance & Florance.

1940

Gordon & Gordon formed with James Waddell Gordon and his son, James W. Gordon, Jr.

1952

James W. Gordon, Jr., joined Florance & Florance. He had practiced with his father, James W. Gordon, in the firm of Gordon & Gordon beginning in 1940, but joined Florance & Florance after his father died in 1952. 

1953

Delmar Brown joined the firm in 1953, he became a partner in 1956, and his name was added to the firm name, which became Florance, Gordon & Brown, in 1957.

1957

The firm became Florance, Gordon & Brown after Delmar Brown became partner. It had been Florance & Florance. 

2003

FGB moved one block away to the firm’s current location in the James Center, 901 East Cary Street, 19th Floor, where the firm had more space to grow.

2017

Kim Ramsey was elected President of the Firm, the first woman to hold that position. Today (2026), half of the partners (shareholders) of the firm are women.

Other Notable Attorneys & Staff

Andrews

Gordon Andrews joined the firm in 1945 and was a partner at his death in 1979.

Kloeti

Robert J. Kloeti joined the firm in 1983 and retired in 2016. He died in 2025. He practiced with the litigation team handling insurance defense cases.

Prosise

Pauline Ring Prosise began working at FGB during in 1962 her senior year of high school and is still with the firm as of 2026.

Ralston

Cary A. Ralston joined the firm in 1976 and retired in 2016. He practiced real estate and corporate/business law.

Tate

James L. Tate, Jr. (1961-1992) (Jim) joined the firm in 1986 (and again in 1990 after a time in the U.S. Army JAG Corps 1987-1989) practicing real estate law until his death in 1992.
