Bill Hoofnagle is a Director of the Firm. He joined the Firm in 1974 and served as its Managing Director from 1991 through 2015 and its President from 1999 through 2015. His background and experience are broad-based, giving him a particularly well-rounded perspective in helping to resolve clients’ issues.
Mr. Hoofnagle is the senior attorney in the Firm’s Construction Law and Litigation Practice Groups. His primary area of practice is construction law.
Mr. Hoofnagle has considerable experience in all types of alternative dispute resolution. He regularly serves as sole arbitrator in smaller cases and as panel chairman or panel member on large, complex case arbitration panels involving multi-million dollar construction and commercial disputes. He is also a qualified mediator, having completed, among other things, a 40-hour mediation certification course. In addition, he has successfully represented many clients in alternative dispute resolution proceedings, including both mediation and arbitration. In association with local counsel, he has also handled alternative dispute resolution matters held in other states.
Mr. Hoofnagle has counseled and represented owners, developers, general contractors, subcontractors, engineers and others in a wide range of construction disputes on both public and private projects. In addition to construction related matters, he also has extensive experience in general commercial litigation and in eminent domain matters. He has represented plaintiffs and defendants throughout Virginia in both state and federal courts as well as before appellate courts. He has also tried cases in other states in association with local counsel.
He has been frequently listed in the “Legal Elite” articles appearing annually in Virginia Business magazine since they began in December of 2000 as one of the Legal Elite in Virginia in the practice areas of real estate/construction or alternative dispute resolution. He has also been listed in articles appearing annually since 2006 in the Virginia Super Lawyers magazine, “The Top Attorneys in Virginia,” as a Top Attorney in Virginia in the practice areas of construction/surety or alternative dispute resolution.
